State Public Service Commissions (MPPSC, UPPSC, BPSC, RPSC and their counterparts) recruit for state administrative, police and allied services — Deputy Collector, DSP, Block Development Officer and similar posts. For most aspirants they run parallel to UPSC preparation with one crucial addition: the state itself becomes a subject.
While details vary by state, the architecture is consistent: an objective Prelims, a written Mains, and an interview, with state-specific general knowledge woven through every stage.
The common structure
Most state PSCs follow the UPSC template at slightly gentler depth.
- Prelims — typically two objective papers: General Studies and a CSAT-style aptitude paper (qualifying in many states); negative marking rules vary by state.
- Mains — descriptive papers on GS, essay and language, with state-specific GS sections.
- Interview — a personality test whose weight varies by commission.
The state-specific layer
The distinguishing scoring area is state GK: the state’s history and freedom-movement figures, geography (rivers, soil, climate zones, minerals), economy and budget highlights, tribes and culture, literature, awards, welfare schemes and current affairs. Commissions ask this at every stage, and national-focused UPSC aspirants routinely lose their edge here. Build a dedicated state-GK notebook from day one — a good state board textbook plus the state’s economic survey covers most of it.
Preparation strategy
If you are already a UPSC aspirant, the marginal work is the state layer plus each commission’s PYQ style; if the state exam is your primary target, borrow UPSC’s sources but calibrate depth with the state’s own papers.
- Solve at least five years of your state’s Prelims PYQs before choosing books — depth varies widely between commissions.
- Alternate national GS revision with state-GK study weekly rather than leaving the state layer to the end.
- For Mains, practice answer-writing early in the state’s required language(s).
- Track your commission’s notification cycle — state exam calendars shift more than UPSC’s, and preparation windows open suddenly.
