GATE CSE opens three doors at once: M.Tech admissions at IITs/IISc/NITs, PSU recruitment that shortlists on GATE scores, and increasingly, research fellowships. Its three-hour paper is a depth exam — conceptual understanding, not memorised facts, decides scores.
The paper mixes question formats in a way that changes strategy: some question types carry negative marking and some do not.
Exam pattern
GATE CSE is a 3-hour computer-based test of 65 questions worth 100 marks: 10 questions (15 marks) of General Aptitude plus 55 questions (85 marks) from the CSE syllabus including Engineering Mathematics.
- MCQ (single correct): negative marking — 1/3 mark off for wrong 1-mark questions, 2/3 for 2-mark questions.
- MSQ (multiple correct): no negative marking, but no partial credit — every correct choice and no wrong ones.
- NAT (numerical answer): type the number; no options, no negative marking.
Where the marks live
Engineering Mathematics plus discrete mathematics together form the single largest block year after year, followed by core pillars: algorithms & data structures, operating systems, computer networks, DBMS, theory of computation, compiler design, computer organisation and digital logic. Aptitude’s 15 marks are the cheapest in the paper — near-full scores there are standard among toppers.
Preparation strategy
A year-long arc works best: concepts first, problems always, mocks late but seriously.
- Months 1–6: subject-by-subject study with standard texts, solving that subject’s 15+ years of GATE PYQs immediately after each topic.
- Months 7–9: mixed-subject problem sets; build formula/concept sheets per subject for revision cycles.
- Months 10–12: full-length mocks weekly, then twice weekly — analyse every mark lost; NAT practice with a virtual calculator.
- Attempt order in the hall: Aptitude first for momentum, then your strongest core subjects, leaving long numericals for the final hour.

What is the negative marking scheme in GATE?
Only single-answer MCQs carry negative marking (1/3 for 1-mark, 2/3 for 2-mark questions). MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking — but MSQs give no partial credit.
Is one year enough for GATE CSE?
Yes, for a focused candidate — even 6–8 disciplined months suffice with PYQ-centric study. Final-year students often prepare alongside coursework.
How important are PYQs for GATE?
