RRB JE Preparation Guide: Pattern, Technical Syllabus & Strategy
Railway (RRB) Exams · Updated September 2026
RRB JE recruits Junior Engineers across civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and IT disciplines for Indian Railways — one of the biggest public-sector engineering recruitments outside the GATE route.
The exam is two computer-based stages: a general CBT 1 and a technically weighted CBT 2 where your engineering discipline decides most of the paper.
Exam pattern
Negative marking of one-third per wrong answer applies in both stages.
- CBT 1 — 100 questions, 90 minutes: Mathematics 30, General Intelligence & Reasoning 25, General Awareness 15, General Science 30.
- CBT 2 — 150 questions, 120 minutes: General Awareness 15, Physics & Chemistry 15, Basics of Computers & Applications 10, Basics of Environment & Pollution Control 10, and Technical Abilities (your discipline) 100.
How to weight your preparation
CBT 2’s 100 technical questions make your core branch subjects two-thirds of the deciding paper. Diploma-level depth with wide coverage beats GATE-level depth in a few topics: RRB JE asks direct, formula-and-fact questions across the whole discipline syllabus.
The non-technical CBT-2 blocks (computers, environment) are short, factual and extremely scoring with a weekend of dedicated notes each — don’t donate those 20 easy questions to competitors.
Preparation strategy
A typical successful runway is 4–5 months: general sections to CBT-1 standard first, then a long technical revision block.
- Revise your diploma/degree core with topic-wise PYQs from RRB JE and similar JE exams (SSC JE, state JEs) — question styles overlap heavily.
- Maintain formula sheets per subject; RRB JE rewards recall speed.
- Weekly full mocks in the last six weeks, separately for CBT-1 and CBT-2 patterns.
- Keep a 30-minute daily current-affairs and science refresher for the general blocks.
Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for RRB JE?
A three-year diploma or an engineering degree in the relevant discipline (post-wise mapping is defined in the notification); age is generally 18–33 with standard relaxations.
Is RRB JE easier than SSC JE?
The technical depth is comparable (diploma level); RRB JE adds general science and a broader non-technical mix. Most JE aspirants prepare for both together.
Do CBT-1 marks count in the final merit?
CBT 1 is a screening stage — the merit list comes from CBT 2. Clear CBT 1 safely, then pour everything into technical revision.
How important are PYQs for the technical section?
Very — a large fraction of technical questions repeat concepts (and often exact numericals) from earlier RRB and SSC JE papers.
