IBPS PO recruits Probationary Officers for public-sector banks across India — a managerial career track with structured growth. The exam’s signature is sectional timing: unlike SSC, you cannot shuffle time between sections, which changes preparation fundamentally.
Selection is Prelims (qualifying), Mains plus a descriptive English paper (the merit driver), and a personal interview, with final selection weighted heavily toward Mains.

Negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer applies to all objective papers.
- Prelims — 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes with fixed sectional slots: English Language 30 questions/20 min, Quantitative Aptitude 35/20, Reasoning Ability 35/20.
- Mains — objective sections covering Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, English Language, and Data Analysis & Interpretation, followed by a 25-mark descriptive paper (essay + letter) typed on the computer.
- Interview — typically weighted around 20% against Mains’ 80% in the final score.
Syllabus highlights
Banking quant is data-interpretation heavy: tables, charts, caselets, plus arithmetic, series, quadratic comparisons and approximation. Reasoning revolves around puzzles and seating arrangements — often more than half the section — plus syllogisms, inequalities, blood relations and input-output. English emphasises reading comprehension, cloze tests, error detection and para-jumbles. Mains adds current banking/economy awareness: RBI decisions, schemes, financial terms and monthly current affairs.
Preparation strategy
Sectional timing means you need three separately strong sections; one weak section cannot hide behind two strong ones.
- Drill puzzles/seating daily — they decide Reasoning scores at both stages.
- Build DI speed with timed sets; learn fraction–percentage conversions cold.
- Read a quality editorial daily for RC stamina and vocabulary in context.
- Maintain a running banking-awareness notebook from monthly capsules — Mains GA cannot be crammed in a week.
- Practice the descriptive paper by actually typing essays/letters under the clock.
