RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) fills posts such as Station Master, Goods Guard, Senior Commercial-cum-Ticket Clerk, Junior Clerk and Accounts Assistant across Indian Railways. It runs in graduate and undergraduate (12th-pass) streams, and its vacancy counts make it one of India’s most attempted exams.
Selection is through two computer-based tests followed, for some posts, by a typing/aptitude test and document verification. The General Awareness section carries the largest weight — a key difference from SSC exams.
Exam pattern
Both CBTs use negative marking of one-third mark per wrong answer. CBT 1 is a screening stage; CBT 2 scores dominate the merit list.
- CBT 1 — 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes: General Awareness 40, Mathematics 30, General Intelligence & Reasoning 30.
- CBT 2 — 120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutes: General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35, General Intelligence & Reasoning 35.
- Station Master and traffic-safety posts include a computer-based aptitude test; clerk-type posts include a typing skill test.
Syllabus highlights
General Awareness is the make-or-break section: national and international current affairs, Indian history, polity, geography, economy, general science at Class-10 level, plus railway-specific and static GK. Mathematics covers number system, simplification, percentages, ratio, interest, time and work, speed-distance, and elementary algebra, geometry and statistics. Reasoning includes series, coding-decoding, puzzles, seating, syllogism, Venn diagrams and analytical reasoning.
Preparation strategy
Because GA is 40–42% of the paper, a maths-first strategy borrowed from SSC preparation underperforms here. Split your daily plan to give General Awareness consistent attention across months — it cannot be crammed in weeks.
- Daily: 45–60 minutes of GA (static + current affairs notes) regardless of what else you study.
- Solve NTPC PYQs stage-wise; note how frequently science and railway-related facts repeat.
- With 1/3 negative marking, keep a personal accuracy floor — attempt only above ~80% confidence.
- In the last month, alternate CBT-pattern mocks with error-log revision; simulate the 90-minute clock strictly.

What is the negative marking in RRB NTPC?
One-third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in both CBT 1 and CBT 2.
Is RRB NTPC only for graduates?
No — it has separate undergraduate-level posts (Class-12 pass, e.g. Junior Clerk) and graduate-level posts (e.g. Station Master, Goods Guard), with separate age bands. Check the notification for the posts you qualify for.
Which section should I prioritise for NTPC?
General Awareness — it is the largest section in both CBTs and the least time-consuming in the exam hall, freeing minutes for Maths and Reasoning.
Are CBT 1 marks counted in the final merit?
