RRB Group D Preparation Guide: Pattern, Syllabus & Physical Test
Railway (RRB) Exams · Updated September 2026
RRB Group D (Level-1 posts) recruits track maintainers, helpers, assistants and pointsmen across Indian Railways — entry-level posts with Class-10 or ITI eligibility and enormous applicant volumes.
Selection is a single computer-based test followed by a physical efficiency test (PET) and document verification, which keeps the preparation cycle short and execution-focused.
Exam pattern
The CBT is a 90-minute paper of 100 questions (100 marks) with one-third negative marking per wrong answer.
- General Science — 25 questions (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences at Class-10 level)
- Mathematics — 25 questions
- General Intelligence & Reasoning — 30 questions
- General Awareness & Current Affairs — 20 questions
- PET follows: lifting-and-carrying plus a timed run, with different standards for male and female candidates (qualifying, not merit-counted).
What makes Group D different
General Science at 25 questions is the signature of this paper — NCERT-level physics formulas, chemistry basics (reactions, acids/bases, everyday chemistry) and biology facts (human body, diseases, nutrition) dominate. Aspirants coming from SSC preparation often under-prepare science and lose their edge here.
Preparation strategy
Three focused months are enough for most candidates if the plan tracks the paper’s actual weightings.
- Revise Class 9–10 NCERT science thoroughly; convert facts into one-line notes for fast revision.
- Drill arithmetic PYQs for speed — Group D maths is formula-light and speed-heavy.
- Practice reasoning sets daily; puzzles and series make up the bulk.
- Begin run training early so the PET is a formality, not a scramble.
